Texting & Driving: The Surprising Generational Gap

|

Throughout the day, 660,000 drivers across the United States are guilty of using their cell phones while driving. Each year, these same distracted drivers are responsible for an estimated 1.6 million car collisions. Despite daily news reports of catastrophic injuries and heartbreaking fatalities, drivers have trouble keeping their hands and eyes away from their phones. Because they are so exhaustively connected to social media, young drivers are often blamed for a majority of these accidents. However, in an interesting turn of events, Volvo recently released a report claiming that it’s our Gen X drivers who are greatly responsible for cell phone-related car accidents.

“Finding Focus on the Road”

Swedish automaker Volvo is a longtime leader in promoting vehicle safety and encouraging safe driving practices. In their latest report, “Finding Focus on the Road,” Volvo proves that it’s actually our older generations who are checking their cell phones when their eyes should be focused on the road. According to Jim Nichols, Product, Technology & Brand Communications Senior Manager for Volvo Car USA, “Distracted driving is not unique to younger generations. In fact, it’s a problem we are seeing across generations and demographics.”

In their report, Volvo revealed that the adults comprising Generation X (ages 35-45) are the most distracted drivers who often use their cell phones to talk, text, check social media, and even take video calls while driving. Alarmingly, 50% of Baby Boomers (ages 54-72) also take phone calls while driving.

Ironically, it’s our youngest generation, Generation Z (ages 3-23), who are statistically the most invested in ending distracted driving.
